Visa Requirements

Visa requirements vary depending on your passport.
Please review the category that applies to you:

U.S. passport holders
No visa required for entry into Portugal.

European Schengen passport holders
No visa required.

ECOWAS passport holders
A Portugal Schengen Short-Stay Visa (Type C) is required.


Visa Application Requirements

If a visa is required, you’ll need the following:

  • A valid passport (with at least 6 months validity remaining)

  • A completed Schengen visa application form

  • Proof of travel (flight reservations)

  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal

  • Travel medical insurance

  • Proof of sufficient funds

The earliest you can apply for a Schengen visa is 6 months before your travel date.

From Accra, Ghana

From Minneapolis (MSP)

Three competitive economy options, typically ranging from $850–$1,200:

  • MSP → Dublin → Faro (Aer Lingus)

  • MSP → Amsterdam → Faro (KLM)

  • MSP → Reykjavik → Faro (Icelandair)

From Chicago (ORD)

Fares generally range from $750–$1,200:

  • Chicago → Lisbon → Faro (TAP Air Portugal)

  • Chicago → Dublin → Faro (Aer Lingus)

  • Chicago → Frankfurt or Zurich → Faro (Lufthansa or Swiss Air)

From Newark (EWR)

Newark offers one of the most convenient options for U.S. travelers:

  • United Airlines nonstop flight from Newark to Faro
    Estimated fare: $550–$1,200
    This is currently the only nonstop flight from the U.S. to Faro and is approximately a 7-hour journey.

Note: The Mensah family is exploring a possible group or package option with United for this route. More details to come.
